Does anyone out there have any tips or techniques they could share when it comes to replacing a damaged cornerpost in a completed vinyl siding job. Thanks in advance.

Jeff,
The siding needs to come off to do it properly and without a lot of aggravation. You might think it would be easier and faster just to rip it off, do something with the heads of the nails, finagle the new post behind the siding on both sides, and take several pieces of siding off each side to nail the new post. It's not.
Remove the siding starting at the top of the post. Draw a pencil line on the wall at the top of each piece you take off and it will be idiot proof when you have the new corner back on and go to put the siding back on.
This might sound like more work than the aforementioned method, but it's not. Trust me.

*We did a repair where we had to replace the corner post on old vinyl siding. Both the color and style of vinyl were no longer available, and were so brittle that taking any off was not an option. We basically cut off the old corner, covered the two ends with J channel, and then I took a new corner post, cut off all the built-in J-channel with a saw, sanded the rough spots, and then pop-riveted it onto the J channels. Looks just like new.
*That's the kind of worksite improvising I like to hear about. That's why I come here.

I have replaced vinyl corner posts by cutting it off with a razor knife along the back of the outside face, and leaving the tab that the siding butts against. Then I cut the nailing hole flange off the new corner, and position the newly created tab over the existing tab. To finish I drill and pop-rivet it together. It would be a lot easier if I could show you a diagram, but with a little thinking you'll figure it out.

Tom, I wish I had thought of that! When I cut the "new" corner post down, it was originally 4" on a side--the old one was something like 2 3/4", so I used my trim saw, with the blade backwards, to cut it, then a block plane to smooth it down. I never thought about just cutting the outside part off.
