I have a job that required cutting into an amazing bathroom tile floor. Tiles are about 1/2″x1″ rectangles laid in a herringbone pattern. Beautiful work. Anyway, I had to cut a whole at the base of the water closet to fix a leaking soil stack. I am really trying to convince the customer to keep the existing floor and there is no way to find a match for the tile (trust me, they and I have made calls). Here is my question: I remember seeing water closets in older homes (like this one) installed on a marble plinth (about 3/4″ think) and about 18″x30″ in size. I had a house in college that had them and I believe they were used before a real flange was available. Anyone know what they are called? I can’t find an online reference at all, and I know they were used. Any other suggestions on how to patch the floor would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks.

You could make a similar "cover" out of Corian.

I was thinking the same, or just go to the local granite supply and order one up.
