Anyone have any experience with direct vent water heaters which use a PVC pipe to exhaust instead of a metal chimney. Are they worth it, last longer? I need to install quite a few feet of double wall pipe (approx $160 worth) if I go w/ standard gas heater because of no existing chimney to dump into. Thanks. Frank

I have installed a number of these and like them. They are great on old houses with failing chimney systems that are no longer needed as well as inexpensive homes that are converting from electric to gas. Simple to install but you will need a source for 120v AC power for the fan and controls. Have also used one in conjunction with PEX tubing to heat the floor of a room. Works great. DanT

I agree with Dan. Good way to go if traditional venting is a problem. The unit is more expensive but also more efficient. In some jurisdictions you don't need the power venter if your pvc flue run is short enough. High efficiency forced air heaters can also be vented this way. best luck, ted
