*Bill ...for UL approved you have to use an "ASSEMBLY" that was tested and approved by UL...go to a site like US Gypsum and get one of their assemblies that will meet your needs, (like ) 5/8" green board type X, steel stud, 1/2" green board type X, or whatever the spec is... you have to follow that spec exactly if you want to meet UL, if its just to comply with local inspection, ask your bldg. inspector what he wants....
