I need advice on how to waterproof the one masonry wall in an otherwise normal shower. I plan to demo the old shower and completely rebuild it. I plan to tile the floor and walls. Thanks, Jerry

Hi Jerry,
I believe a product known as ultra-set would bond to concrete and tile while providing a waterproof membrane. Depending on your application this may not be necessary. Ultraset will make you feel like brer rabbit after he punched the tar baby. Glazed tile set on concrete with a proper thinset for the substrate, properly grouted is probably waterproof enough for your application.
Painted or unpainted concrete? Poured basement wall? Poured basement wall with additional basement area on the other side? Other?

Thanks Joe,
My application involves a plastered imperial brick wall that is perpendicular to a framed wall. The shower is 50+ years old and did not have waterproofing on the masonry, under the tile. I've demoed to the brick and there is no evidence of H2O damage. Normal, exposed exterior wall. In addition to ultra set, another product is known as Triple Flex by TEC: "a multipurpose elastomeric product consisting of a high solids acrylic latex additive and a cement based powder". It consists of three parts and is expensive. Jerry

Ultraset is expensive also. For that matter TEC makes an expensive thinset that is my all time favorite thinset.

Joe, I take it that ultra-set would not be the product of choice for waterproofing a garage concrete floor? I'm turning the garage into a woodshop. Thanks for any suggestions.
