mike,
the archives are still around. the archives from the past month are in a folder here, at < Obsolete Link > Archives, and older files (antediluvian) can be found there, uner the moniker Classic Archives.

Skim-coating with joint compound covers texture, renews old drywall and plaster, and leaves smooth surfaces ready to paint.

once topics get archived, that's it. no replies, no messages. topics stay live for one week, then they get remaindered, but you can always copy-and-paste old topics into new topics.

"Topics stay live for one week" Does that mean for one week after the last post?
Rich

yup. then they get archived.
*
Which means that if there are topics that should eb kept active, you need to make sure you post to them once a week to "bump" them up to the top.
I really think a 15 or even 30 day "inactive" period before archiving would be better....

ha! do you know how big this board gets after one week? maybe i can just make subboards... or folders... any suggestions?
*
> You asked for suggestions. a. There are so many posts: Many of them just different flavors of the same topic. So, one week after the last post should be enough for us. b. Some of us are such experts we haven't learned yet how to write to express versus writing to impress. So maybe some limits on reply length would be in order. Then if a reader wants all the calculations they can contact the reply poster.
*I'd like to see a subboard on ventilation, and cellulose vs fiberglass. Call it "Weatherization"?Then I could avoid it. Those discussions tend to be overly-opinionated and suited to a particular damp and cold climate somewhere I wouldn't want to live in anyway.
*
Mr. Wheeler may be on to something with the idea for a subboard for "Weatherization".
He could avoid it and I could go directly to it as the subject is a very important one to us in the cold climates.
It is true that the subject somehow (too much talk about moisture?) encourages piddling on each other's toes. While this aspect does distract from the ambiance of the "room", I don't know where I would go to replace the knowledge I am able to gain by reading this exchange of information.
Thanks, Taunton, for supporting this forum.

To change topic slightly, is it possible to change the main listing so it uses a different word than "new" in "6 messages, 2 new". Maybe "...2 recent". In scrolling, I sometimes feel I can't tell if a touch of red ran by or not. A longer word would be easier to see. Also, one could do a search in the page for it. "New" gets used too much in the topics.
*Sean, Can we do enclosures, too?The only partitioning of this board that makes sense, i.e. anyone can reasonably expect us to observe, is the one already in effect at Fine Woodworking; Tools and general topics. If I recall you tried some other form of partitioning on this board and nobody posted according to the expected categories. It led to confusion. I'm confused enough as it is.

Have all archived threads before the great crash of early December 1998 been lost forever? Can we now reply to archived threads, causing them to be made current again? (I could have tried that last one to see if it would work, but it was better to bother you, since you get paid for this and I don't)
