What do solar water heaters cost?
What do solar water heaters cost? I’ve looked at a couple sites, but they don’t list price.
Years ago, it was like $4-6k for a family of 4 sized unit.
I see Velux now makes a system:

And these Thermomax tubes always looked interesting:

In NC I generally pay $6,500 for an 80 gallon two panel drain back system, $350 more if they use the tubes in a remodel situation where I can't get a pipe to the bottom of the collector and need the fluid to run in and out at the top.
Edit to add http://www.solarhotusa.com/ has a good comparison of the different efficiencies of the systems out there.

In Maryland an installed system goes in the 10 grand range. I really wanted one but I don't use enough to come close to breaking even

John,
I try to keep track of reported costs around the country. For 2 flat-plate collectors and an 80-gallon or 120-gallon tank, I usually hear people estimate between $6,000 and $9,000. I'm a little suspicious of the lower end of the range -- those prices may be obsolete. In 2006 I installed my own system (at my own house) and kept track of materials costs for tax-credit purposes; materials were $3,250. The price of copper has risen sharply during the past few years.
