About to DIY’er another floor in the house. It’s been awhile since the last time I painted…..what are some great paint brands out there. Back in the days, it was BM, Pittsburgh, Pratt and Lambert and Sherwin.
What paint brands are the *brands * to check out. I’d rather get it right the first time around.

Ben Moore is tops for me.
Any brand that is self-installing.
My first thought too. The only self install I get is on the floor or on Joe.
S&W here in Utah, Vista in Southern Cal.

Joe,
You ever tried Kwal-Howells in Utah?
Haven't seen that brand. WHere is it sold?
Joe H
They sell it out of their own stores - there's one down the street from me in American Fork. I notice that our local one has recently changed the sign to just plain 'Kwal', so I guess the Howells are out of the picture (must be marooned on an island somewhere). I'm just a homeowner so no vast experience here, but I've had good luck with them - the paint seems to go on easily, have good adhesion, and I can even get one coat coverage.
interior- BM, SW, Valspar (at Lowes, they make the American Tradition)
exterior- California, and Glidden exterior rates well.

They are based out of Denver and they have strange distribution of stores. Here is one near me, but I have never been in it.http://www.kwalhowells.com/locations.html
Zinsser PermaWhite for baths.

For floors...BM Porch and Floor.

Colours in Portland, Oregon?
Hummmm...at Miller Paint here in Portland, we call them Colors.
Maybe we're just weird
B. Miller
Depending where you are, there may be a great regional company. Here in LA, it's Dunn-Edwards. Paramount uses them for everything.

"Paramount uses them for everything."I thought that some of the makeup on the actors looked "different".
All of the higher end brands at the middle or higher of the price range have been fine paints for me.
I highly recommend Zinsser Mildew Proof Bathroom Paint for the bathroom and possibly the kitchen. It is wonderful.
Believe it or don't, Consumer Reports rated Home Depot's Behr paint and Lowe's American Traditions as tops in all categories. I use them and have had very good results. The only exception is Behr Ultra Pure White semi-gloss. It seems to take three coats to cover. I always count on two coats no matter what paint it is.

I can't understand how Behr gets a top rating. I have used it on numerous occasions and have not been very satisfied with the results. BM for all of my interior work has been my favorite.
Brian....Bayview Renovations
Pratt and Lambert used to be the absolute best, but since SW bought the place the formulas have all changed and it's no longer very good.
Go with BM
Pratt and Lambert used to be the absolute best, but since SW bought the place the formulas have all changed and it's no longer very good.
Has that change occurred in the last 8 years?
8 years ago I used P&Lambert, had great results, and was planning on using it again in spite of its high cost. Now you have me wondering. At the time, i really did prefer it to BM. My house is 150+ years old, so the siding is not a smooth surface. The P&L handled that better and, per actual observed results, the finish surface outlasted the BM.
1996; the change of the formulas happened over the next few years. I used the P+L ceiling paint 3 years ago (I used to paint in the late 80's and early 90's and always used P+L) and it was completely different. Used to be the best ceiling paint, no splatters at all, but it was just awful, wouldn't even cover.
When I asked, the store I bought it at told me the formulas had all changed, and they were going to stop carrying P+L. Heard the same from a California Paint distributor (good paint also, imho) who said what happened to P+L was the biggest disapointment in his paint career.
Everyone's formulas have changed because of envoro regs regarding pollutants and VOCs. BM is not as good as it once was either. my painter prefers some SW exterior paints now.
My own opinion is that Pratt and Lambert covers well and looks good enough but it is one of the hardest to work with. Some of my jobs have been getting Farrow and Ball speced the last few years. The [painters love it. Flows well, covers in one coat, and looks good when done.

The guy I talked to was a long-time paint rep, and he seemed to know the business pretty well.
BM seems about the same to me as 15 years ago, many even a little better (particulary in latex, which have all gotten better) but I used to love working with P+L and now I can't stand it.
I drive by houses I did 15 years ago in P+L that still look decent (from the road, at least)
the kind i dont have to apply . lol

This is good stuff http://www.finepaintsofeurope.com/paints_info.aspx .
But maybe the reason it come out so well is because of the expense; you do all the recommended prep work after spending so much. But really looked at as a per year cost it's less expensive.
As much as I like B Moore Impervo, this is better.
I'm a painter and I usually use Ben-Moore or sherwin williams. Behr is junk, it's very sloppy and hard to cut with. I think that it's just inexpensive and there are home depots everywhere.
You can't go wrong with either Ben or Sherwin, which ever is closer or less expensive or has a color or a store you like would be your best bet. I've notice that lately the sherwin covers a little better in the deep base colors, but they both cover great if your gonna use two coats. Get a decent brush and take your time.
just noticed a Miller responded from Oregon
are you part of the paint family?
for others Miller makes the Devine brand and they are excellent for interior work - there is not a brand in existence w/ a better color palette!
