What should we do with Mahogany siding?
Hi, our house has mahogany siding (you can see on http://ranchredo.blogsome.com). We’re just getting into our first warm temperatures (we moved in this house in August) and my husband is raring to go and refinish the mahogany. Here are our questions:
1)We love the color the Mahogany is in front of the house…nice golden color. We’re guessng because it’s been in the sun more since it’s the south facing side? However, the sides and back are much much darker. How can we bring the darker to match the lighter? Maybe it’s not possible…
2) Someone put some type of varnish on the front of the house at some point. We want to take it off…how?
3) How should we finish the Mahogany once it is stripped?

I'd start by googling Sikkens
they are the company that provides an excellent finish system for a lot of high end mahogany doors and such.
Thanks Pete, we'll look into this. We're thinking of purchasing a silent paint remover, as we've heard it's a good investment...
You want to take the varnish off the exterior of a house ? Wow. I think you are setting up your self for a big unfinished project.
I see this is your first post and thread .

Yes, my husband plans on it taking the entire summer because it will take awhile, a long while.
After you get to bare wood I would look at a tung oil finish.
I used Cabot's Australian tung oil on the deck pictured, http://www.cabotstain.com/
If you want a clear finish check out http://www.waterlox.com
Pardon the mud, the customer's dog likes tracking up the deck.

Thank you, your deck is beautiful.
Is that cedar?Chief of all sinners.
It's 5/4x6 mahogany.
you can spend you life varnishing it and redoing it every few years then again in a few years then again ........ why not put hardie plank over it and take the time you save year after year to go camping in that cool looking teardrop camper?
Nah, my husband wants to keep it Mahogany. It's original and unique, which is why we bought the house.
I wonder if you could find a lot of good information on a wooden boat restoration web site. Someone once posted a link to a site affiliated with Wooden Boat magazine. Mike Smith where are you!John Svenson, builder, remodeler, NE Ohio
