What tool is this?

Dreamcatcher | Posted in Tools for Home Building on December 28, 2007 06:58am

I was looking through the Detroit Craigslist and stumbled across a posting that arose my curiosity. It was for a “tablesaw trimmer”. It was listed for only $25 so I opened to find what I can see as a small cabinet tablesaw with a small opening below which must be the “trimmer” portion. I google searched for “super speed tablesaw trimmer” but came up short. Do any of you know how and why this machine works?

Here’s the link: http://detroit.craigslist.org/tls/520750188.html

Here’s one of the pics from the ad:

For $25 may just be a fun conversation piece for the shop.

This gentleman owns one, perhaps you could e-mail him and get some answers.

I was tempted to get it just for the heck of it. I'm in Redford.

I was wondering the same thing as you though. My problem is I only have my basement right now...

Let us know if you get it. Whereabouts you located?

Julian,You asked me that before and I forgot to answer back. I live in a small town called Byron. It's sorta between Flint and Fenton. I still make the drive to the subs of Detroit everyday to provide carpentry services to the rich city folk. Used to be a great building economy around here. City folk moving to the country and building/remodding grandeous style. As I'm sure you know that's not so now. No really great building economy in Michigan now. But we get by. Still havn't had to resort to advertising though and that says alot. I've been seeing all the deals you've been snagging up. I saw your post for the Festool stuff and that got me to look at CL for the first time. I still havn't made any purchases, usually just too slow. Gotta work sometime though. And I have most of the tools I need right now. The trimmer just seemed like a good convsrsation piece; Heck maybe I could actually get some work out of it occasionally too!?!?!gk

If we could only get a better picture of it - the top of it, maybe it could actually be a useful thing to have.Like if you could put a Dado set in it - make it a dedicated dado setup - that'd be handy.Looks like it has a nice solid CI top - you could machine it out and make a serious router table cabinet. I'm around Farmington occasionally, might have to take a look at it. I think I'll ask the seller if he can take a few closeup pictures to see what the heck it really does.Aside from passing out some glossy postcard sized before and afters, I haven't yet done any advertising either, but I've been part of a BNI group for the last 2 1/2 years and that's done a lot for me - definitely worth being in, as anyone with a house is a possible client.Between that and the other contacts/clients thru the last few years, I seem to get calls for stuff rolling in every week or so.Only been doing this since 2004, so still learning the ropes - still trying to get on top of estimating correctly and all the other aspects that come with this seemingly 24/7 day job. Here's what I've been doing:http://www.juliantracy.com/RBD%20Remodel%20Jobs/Definitely got to move fast on those CL deals - there was a few Unisaws a month ago that seemed like great deals... gotta build me a garage one of these days.I've been selling a lot on CL to -can't stand to sit on stuff I no longer need - sold an air compressor yesterday and selling my Bammer later today.Take care,JT

I recall those being used for slicing cast lead type in the printing industry.

I worked in a shop that had  one ,we used it for small cut offs...the type blanks fall down into that chute ( I think).

Edit: BUY IT! The sliding table is worth 2-3 x that !

Sphere is exactly right. It is a lead trimmer used to fit the lead type face in the printing trade prior to linotype and offset or whatever is being used now. While the blade is small everything is heavy duty and very precise. A while ago I nearly bought and old print shop to use as a cabinet shop. Some of its equipment which included three of these saws and I was lusting to have them. Sadly for me the owner got sober and restarted the printing business before the sale was complete. One of those saws would be a sweet thing to have if you have the space.

I barely have space, but for $25 - it doesn't look that big. What would you do with it then? Already have a bandsaw/mitersaw/tablesaw... wonder what kind of arbor length/diameter it has?I still think a dedicated dado saw would be the ticket. even if just drawer channels or box joints. That'd be cool, a dedicated box joint machine.JT

Indeed, I think you are on the right track, a dedicated joint machine. Tenon cheeks, box joints, precise cut off of small parts etc. I don't know about the arbor and other parts but I don't think you can go too far wrong with it. It might be worth $25 to the iron monger if it proves to be worthless to you.
