I have a loft built in my shop that gets unbearably hot in the summer that I am going to insulate/drywall. Flat roof w/rolled roofing, 2 x 4 rafters @ 24″ centers with 1/2″ ply sheeting. Altho I would rather not, I could loose a couple inches in ceiling height if it would get me a bit cooler room.
What do you guys think would be my best bet? I have like zero knowledge when it comes to insulation. thanks much!
The size of the loft is 14′ x 25′. In Los Angeles, by the way.

The foil foam you can get at the big box store cut to fit will help alot. What ever thickness you can afford. White roof coat will also help, also a 12" vent with a solar fan to dump the heat.

Don't infill - use sheets of foil faced foam nailed to face of the rafters across them, then strapping, then the sheetrock
This will give you an effective radiant barrier against the kind of heat you suffer from while providing for ventilations sso you are less likely to suffer from trapping heat and building it up. The R-value of this foam is about R-5/inch or so.

Excellence is its own reward!
Is the loft part of a larger building?
Could you add a layer of foam on the outside and roof over that?
Maybe raise the roofline a few inches?

Look up roof supply stores in your area. They will have better quality products than the big box stores. They might only sell to the pros tho. Call and ask.
I say then infill fiberglass ( you have no ventilation to begin with) and then foam board screwed to the underside of the rafters, then drywall.
