I admit it has been a couple years since I’ve had to rent a U-Haul truck to pick up something bulky, but WHEN THE HECK DID THEY GET SO EXPENSIVE?!
Usta be able to get one with unlimed miles for 24 hours for about $50-60 plus gas. Now they want $20-40 plus $.69/mile plus gas. Shoot, you can put a hundred miles on ’em in nothing flat. Even the little ones can break $100 for a single day of running around.
What the heck is going on?!

There are less truck rental places than there used to be. U-Haul had some serious troubles in the company a few years ago. They about went broke. They don't seem to maintain their vehicles very well any more.
I just did an online rate quote for a 14' truck for saturday so that I can move a bedroom set. Base rate was $29.95 - I can work with that. Mileage was $.99 per mile. That means my little 2 hour project and 42 miles of driving is going to cost me about $80 plus gas when all is said and done. You're getting off easy if you were quoted $.69 a mile.
Cheaper during the week. You might pay .69 if you moved it then.
And seems like the price for the base truck is the same as the next size or two above it. Shooot, I might as well get one of the larger ones if the $$ is the same. As long as it ain't the 26'er, I should be able to get 'er in just about anywhere.

I'd like to be able to move this stuff during the week but it just can't happen with my work schedule and the schedules of the people helping. I would explore HD or Lowes route if there wasn't a forecast of rain on saturday morning.
Like ZAK said, a 6 x 12 Uhaul trailer might work for you. I used one in August. $32 including taxes for 1 day - no mileage charge. The best part was that my truck (Chevy Colorado) didn't get that bad of gas mileage with the trailer behind it.
Get a truck rental from Home Depot or Lowes, very cheap no mileage charge.
I have used the Lowes truck a few times. It was like $20 flat fee for ...75mins? No mileage restriction, no need to put gas in it, quick to rent... overall good experiences.
But it is really best for quick runs.jt8

Yep, quick runs for real cheap. And if it is a "local" haul. Have the furniture outside waiting then go get the truck.
I've seen people hauling junk to the dump with them!
would a trailer do the job? This summer, I moved with a U-haul trailer. I was stunned at how cheap it was. Started out at $100 bucks to drive 1,000 miles, and a 4 day rental.
But they made me drive an hour each way to pick the trailer up, so I bartered them down to $80 for 6 days. That was a 6x12' trailer, but only about 5.5' inside.

No, trailer wouldn't be big enough. Have they got odometers on the trailers now?! Don't remember getting charged mileage on trailers before.

I know you didn't ask for this, but I can't help myself...
From what I've seen and heard, UHaul is the worst truck rental business in existence.
I'm certainly not alone in this opinion.... http://www.uhaul-sucks.com/

I'll probably go with a Pensky. About the same cost, but the rental yard that has the Pensky trucks is less than 1.5 miles from the project house.jt8
