I’m building a new home and would like to add 1″ or 2″ sheets of rigid insulation to the exterior 2×6 walls to provide more insultation. I will be using cement fiber siding. Is this feasible? If so, what is the best sequence of application?:
1) studs, rigid insulation, sheathing, house wrap, cement fiber siding
2) studs, sheathing, rigid insulation, house wrap, cement fiber siding
Or
3) rigid insulation (applied to interior), studs, sheathing, house wrap, cement fiber siding?

studs, sheathing, house wrap, rigid insulation, furring strips, cement fiber siding
Have you applied insulation as you recommended with good results?
What are the recommended dimensions of the furring strips?
Finally, if I used a 3D house wrap like that featured in the current issue of Fine Homebuilding, could I avoid the furring strips?
Thanks for your advice
The sheathing must be directly on the studs and in your climate the foam should be on the interior side of the studs.
So from inside out -
paint
SR
Strapping
Foam
2x4studs
sheathing
housewrap
siding
paint

What is the purpose of the strapping? Couldn't I place the SR against the rigid insulation? Or maybe the strapping is providing a cavity for the wiring so I don't have to puncture the insulation for outlet and switch boxes?
Thanks for your input.
You CAN place SR directly on the foam, but it gets tricky hitting studs with the screws then

Sorry, what is the sr? drywall?
yes, drywall = sheetrock = sr
Thanks, feel kinda silly to have asked. Have seen d.w. , g.b. , gyp. , never sr, but ya think I coulda figured that one out.
Have you considered using a polyurethane spray foam insulation in the stud bays? Urethane has a higher R value, fills and seals the stud bays completly. No rigid foam, no strapping. By the time you buy and istall the foam and strapping I think you would be $ ahead. Especially considering you would have none of the structural concerns with foam sheathing, no odd size jambs for doors and windows, electrical box mounting issues etc.
I was hoping to reduce thermal conductivity through the studs by adding a veneer of insulation. But, like you mentioned, it may not be worth the extra $ and aggravation.
Thanks for your input
It is definitely worthwhile if you are using FG batts for your other insualtion
