Hello –
Our roof is due for a replacement, probably next spring as soon as it starts getting hot.
In the meantime, the roof is showing half a dozen nail heads that have popped up through the shingles.
I need to work them back down carefully and seal the spots to get us through the winter.
They were disconvered while I was up there inspecting and clearing the gutters. Inspection of the attic didn’t reveal any signs of leaks after several heavy rains.
Will silicone do the job ?
Is there a roofing specific caulking that works better ?
I also want to dab some around vent stacks and chimney flashings to be ready for snow.
Thanks !
Alan

If you are just trying to get through another year, anything will do.
I can't say silicone does well with petroleum products..... but there is a product called "Through The Roof" that is very good with asphalt. Or just plain old plastic roof cement in a can or a caulk tube.

Go with Henry 208 plastic roof cement . Somehow it will get on you so wear old clothes and bring some rags.
If the "caulk/sealant" is going to be exposed, use butyl rubber. Widely available around here if you are not picky about color. If the "caulk/sealant" is used to cement something down and will be covered by the something, use roof cement.
You can get roof cement in tubes, but I actually find it neater to take it out of a one gallon can.

Thanks, Folks.
Went with "Through the Roof" - most expensive of the selection in tubes. It spreads easier then silicone.
