a client wants me to put paving stones on her concrete slab patio. she insists that the correct way to do this is over about 2″ of sand. i’ve done these befofe and put the paving stones directly on the concrete-without any type of adhesive & it worked fine. am i missing something? how would you do it?

Over a concrete slab I'd probably use mortar, but sand will work and allow leveling of the stones. Sweep sand into the joints also.
Unless you're going to cement them down I'd use sand as well..."polymere" sand to be exact. It will help with drainage and to level out any irregularities if there are any.
Fill the joints with stone dust. It compacts like concrete and bugs and weeds stay out of it.
Why not cement the bricks onto the patio???

Make sure ya edge it or the sand will wash out over time.
For the best results, after you sand the joints, spray this stuff:

The sand sets up like mortar, but still allows water to penetrate. No tracking sand!
THANKS GUYS
I'd use stone dust rather than sand. It will compact more solidly and the ants won't like it.
