My sister-in-law purchased an older home in Seattle. They painted and carpeted the entire house, and now they are looking at window replacement. Not exactly the order I would have done it, but that’s another story. So, I suggested replacement windows as this will create a minimal mess, and they are neat freaks. Because it is an upscale home and they have expensive tastes I recommended Renewal by Andersen. Currently they have a lot of direct set glass windows with some gliding windows underneath. The exterior is cedar. They’d like to replace with mostly gliding windows and some awning, for more ventilation. Well, they about had an aneurysm when they got the quote.
Any suggestions as far as alternatives or any other advice? They don’t want double-hungs. I don’t think vinyl windows will fit the look of the house. Does Marvin make something comparable to Renewal? Or is there some other window manufacturer in the Northwest that would be worth looking into?
Any of you guys interested in looking at the job?

Not sure if these guys carry what you are looking for, or are any cheaper, but I can say we used them on a project house and were happy with their workmanship:

Have then take a look at the Jeld-Wen Custom Wood windows, formerly know as Pozzi windows.

We have used a lot of the Pozzi windows since the late 80's, and have been happy with them. Also if you go and look, most of the high end homes in east King County built in the last 20 years have Pozzi windows.
Forgot to add the Jeld-Wen or Pozzi windows are made in Oregon. So that will save on shipping.

Hi, I do a lot of retrofit windows for older homes in Seattle. Your sister-in-law might consider windows that have fiberglass frames with wood veneer interiors or wood frame with metal clad exteriors. Both types should cost less than Renewals. We're installing Jeld-wens in our home right now. They're reasonably priced and look great. If your sister-in-law would like to meet with me to discuss the replacement project, she can visit our website (http://www.snowridge-exteriors.com) and contact us via e-mail.

Thanx for the great feedback everyone. I just sent them an email with the information you guys provided. They'll probably be giving you a call Kirk.Thanx!

Out of curiosity, what price were they quoted for the Andersens (for the windows and for the installation)? It's always nice to know what the market rate is.
I just did a window project in Seattle and we used Loewen. They're a Canadian manufacturer and they use Doug fir, which is important to me. The oldtimers here swear that other softwoods just don't hold up in this climate, and their opinion jibes with my own observations.

It's irrelevant as I don't know what the sizes and specs of the windows are.......besides, some people on this board maybe giving her a quote..View Image
