Wireless Keyfob and Relay Wanted

DonStephan | Posted in General Discussion on March 21, 2006 08:41am

Purchased a dust collection system for my woodworking studio. The impeller motor is 5HP 240V and I have on order a magnetic switch motor controller and enclosure (with on/off buttons) to switch the 5HP motor.

There are commercial wireless dust collector control systems, but not for motors as large as 5HP.

I’d like to add a very simple two-piece wireless control system to turn the motor on and off, a small keyfob with on/off buttons communicating directly with a 110V relay that can be mounted inside the magnetic switch enclosure. I’ve searched the Internet for hours with no luck. Leviton has the perfect keyfob, but in a three-piece system costing about $100 – the keyfob sends the wireless signal to an intermediate receiver unit that then sends a separate signal over 110V wiring to the third piece, the relay. I’ve found two-piece ceiling fan remote control retrofit packages for $40 that have the perfect relay (short wires attached to a small sealed relay ready to be mounted in an enclosure) but the handheld is the size of a TV remote.

Searched Radio Shack, Grainger, Farmtek and Tecsupply web sites for “wireless remote” with no luck. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Don:

Try smarthome www.smarthome.com.  I think woodcraft also sells something like you're after.

Thanks for the suggestion. Woodcraft item won't handle 5 HP. I'll try Smarthome again.

I had a deal like that once and it would turn on and off whenever it picked up some electrical noise.

If you bought the commercial one you are talking about, I could make it work.  Might need an additional contactor, might not.

OK here's the real deal.  7.5 hp single phase or 25 hp 3 phase controller, 138 bucks.  DK3303 kit, 1(800)382-1924,  Fernbrook Automation. Get an extra remote for $15, and they control 2 switches so you can control 2 devices if you want.

Thanks for the suggestion. When I looked at this web site yesterday it looked like all their receivers have to be plugged into a duplex and the motor plugged into the receiver's duplex. Workable but not a direct connect solution. Also even pricier than the Leviton solution.

It says good for 25 hp 3 phase on the description. I don't think that would plug into a receptical.  Might give them a call.  It's free.

look at Ramsey winch stuff - they make a wireless remote, used to be about $50. 2 buttons for 2 sides of a relay (cable in/cable out on a winch).

one more $19 magnetic contactor  12 or 24v coil  to operate your 110v contactor... then a universal garage door opener  $15 on ebay...

Would a garage door opener remote control work? I was thinking it only turns on the opener motor, and that the motor turns off based on a trip mechanism on the chain. Need to be able to turn on and off from the wireless remote. Thanks.

any 12v remote off & on would work...  any multi use magnetic contactor with a 12v coil  that would then trigger/power your 110volt magnetic contactor (you will also need a small 12v transformer think hvac or doorbell type... any automotive type remote you'll have the 12v from the transformer ...  i think this should be pretty simple you you collect ay junk at all most of these parts are lay'n around and the remote  look on ebay for a automotive remote that locks unlocks doors if you don't think a garage door one will on/off

How about just wiring a switch someplace that is close to the machinery and easy to reach.

Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
