Hi, I need to build a 2,000-4,000 b.f. kiln for drying wood from my wood-mizer sawmill. I’ve read plenty of articles and books but would love to hear from someone with some real experience. I’m in the Pacific Northwest so I’m not planning on solar (unless I hear some success stories). Thanks

Pete - where are you at in the PNW? - yb
*Look up http://www.nyle.com/. They manufacture dehumidification dryers in all sizes. Don't discount solar totally even in the PNW as you should get enough gain in the course of the year to supplement a mechanical system. See: http://www.solarwall.com/system.htmlAlso look into using SIP's for the envelope. Their overall energy efficiency makes them a good choice for a small or large kiln.
*panelmal - What's are "SIP's"? I have noticed you and others reffering to them, but don't have knowledge myself. thanks - yb
*YB,Go to http://www.eaglepanelsystems.com or type in Structural Insulated Panel into a search engine. Panelmal
*young bob, thanks for asking that. I've been wondering about them myself but didn't want my total ignorance to show all at once. Up till now I thought Sips were to do with beer drinking....just shows how wrong you can be.
*mark - never did mind "taking one for the team" - hey - are you in Australia? A few years ago I was training to teach school and they were trying to recruit teachers to go down there for a year. Our kids were little then, and I was really interested. Have traveled a bit, and always thought that would be great - different culture but still the same (basically anyway) language. Were you raised there? or an import yourself? - yb
*young bob,no, Aussie born and bred ( as I said to Pete the other day, I can't even speak Italian.) It's a pity you didn't give it a go when the kids were little. We went to NZ when ours were younger ( admittedly it's only across the ditch)and had a great time and made some real good friends.
*mark - you get four seasons? I have the image of a hot, dry climate and mostly flat, plains type terrain, way off? - yb
*depends where you are. No you're not way off, though where we are at 800 mtres ( thats for Patrick and Mike )we do get 4 seasons ( no snow though). However drive 12 hours west of here and you start to hit desert for the next 2,500 miles.
