Phillipine Mahogany Door has marine varnish. Lower half is faded and
has spots which doesn’t appear to have any varnish. Believe inadequate
number of coats?????? Can I sand bottom and try and feather in to match
top half which looks good? Once matched, add some additional coats.
Don’t know brand used, but any thoughts as to a quality brand. Front
door is part of a unit that also has side and above door frames with glass. Sand paper/sponges? Brush type? Comments appreciated!!!!!!

Dear Mr. Hopper,
I believe that the problem with your doors is the marine finish. Most of the cross linking verithanes and urithanes are not UV resistant.
I had an independent come by recently who applied a finish which is generally unavailable to the general market place. He had previously used this finish on my neighbors front doors and after two years they still look to be perfect.
His name is Rich Constant, his phone number is (909) 599-4990, his fax number is (909) 599-4199.
Mr. Constant is the expert, but I think that you will need to completely strip your doors of all the current finish, re-stain them to a consistent color and then apply Mr. Constant's finish.
Good Luck,
Sincerely,
Michael A. Nicole

richard... the top of your door was more protected than the bottom..less sun.. out of the splash zone.. etc..
not a question of not enough coats.. the top half is the proof of that... it's really a question of not enough maintenance.. varnished surfaces are high maintenance...
and marine varnishes are specially formulated to be UV resistant.. so ..
the problem with clear finishes on wood is that they do not and will not protect the wood the same as paint... they have to be renewed more often.....
sand the whole door down and give it 4 coats minimum of a good urethane with good UV resistance.. just be prepared to touch it up next eyar and sand and refinish every other year... if you stay on a two year maintenance program you will not have to strip it like you do now....
b but hey, whadda i no ?

You also might try a clear coat automotive finish. Expensive but works.
*Mr. cooper, Michael is on the right track. You need to strip the varnish off the door completely and consider using an oil finish that absorbs into the wood nested of sitting on top of it. Such products in my area are called "Daly'Day'sFin or Pro-Fin. They work like a Teak oil would. These products require some maintaince but are tough finishes that have lasted on my doors for years of direct sun light, rain, kids and dogs.
