I’m currently buidling a home myself -I’m not a building professional. I’ve acted as General COntractor and will be doing all of the finish work myself.
It was my intent to install wood jam extensions around our vinyl windows. As I look at them, I’ve noticed that there’s not a lot of window frame heigth between the the rough sill and the start of the glass. Assuming that the stool will be 3/4″, this will leave very little reveal along the bottom once it’s installed.
As I write this, I’m looking at the aluminum framed windows in our current house and see that they have a about a 1/4″ reveal above the stool. Is this normal? It just doesn’t feel right to me.

Windy, I'm not sure I understand your question, but as a trim contractor, I put in jamb extensions all the time. 3/16" is normally the reveal on the sides and head. Mock one up and ask your wife, ever the bastion of good taste.
Good luck, BB
*You could always run a rabbit in the stool to increase the reveal and rip down the side and top extentions. Doesn't take to much time, especially if you have a small table saw, which I can't trim without.
*Are you saying where the stool butts the window unit there will be 1/4" edge of the window unit showing? Or, stated differently, the sill of the window unit will be 1/4" higher than the stool? On my Marvins, I remove the bottom piece of hamb and butt the stool right up against the sill. The stool ends up 3/8" higher than the sill. I slope the stool and caulk the joint. Wind driven rain with windows open will run off the stool and down the sill.-Rob

I may have confused some people by titling this jam extensions and then asking about the stool.
BB: You're right, my windows have a 3/16" reveal. Just having someone say that's the way its done, makes me feel a little better.
JD: I thought about a rabbet, but boy would that be a lot of trouble...and on every window!
Thanks for the help.
