I am looking into building a wood burning oven for my home. This would be
an outdoor oven of a reasonable size for family use. Does anyone know of a
good source of information for how to build one of these? There are plenty
of sites on the web for buying them, but I couldn’t find any about building
them. Thanks for your help,

Reminds me of a poster I once saw. It said:
b "Polish wood stove - guaranteed to burn 2 hours"
*Dave, I've seen articles regarding these in various food magazines - Food & Wine, primarily. These articles don't go into great detail about how to build them, but they may give some resources in the back. I'll see if I can dig some up for you, or check out Food & Wine's website or even e-mail their editor. I'm sure they can help you. The website is:Sounds like a great project. I would love to have one at my house!
*Reminds me of an old family recipe:b Delicious Recipe for cooking blue fish:Get a blue fish, any size will do, previously frozen for 2 yrs Ok. No need to cut out the dark meat, it doesn't spoil the meal as some folks say.Get a yellow pine board. Select a board clear of knots and trim to a size about 3 inches longer than the fish.Soak the board and the fish in salt brine 12 hrs prior to beginning the cooking process.Thoroughly grease the board with virgin olive oil to prevent the fish from sticking.Lay the gutted fish on the whole on the board, being sure.Season with lemon butter, freshly ground cyan pepper, and oregano.Preheat oven to 300 degrees.Bake for 1 hour per pound of fish.Remove from oven. Let cool for 30 minutes...Throw the fish away and eat the board...PS: Try over on the "Knots" web site. They are pretty good at making appliance sized items out of wood!
*David,At the end you'll find a list of sites that I have bookmarked. I haven't QC'd them myself, you may have already visited and discounted them. One thought...for an even, high-temp heat, the design of the fire section of a woodburning oven is fairly specific. I've only seen two of these built, but both times the fire section was ordered from an outside company, then a mason was hired to build the surround. If you're up to it, building the surround and chimney assembly to house the fire section could be a DIY job.For building the surround, specifications come with the modular unit as to what is needed. From there, construction proceeds just like a regular backyard grill, smoker, or BBQ made from stone or brick.I suppose you could try to build the fire section yourself. You could go off the measurements/angles of the previously linked modular unit, but honestly, it’s not something I recommend anyone but an experienced mason try, at least with this little information. The geometry of the fire section does matter. Mess it up and you may have a 4000 pound disappointment in your backyard. If you do find specific info on how to construct one, please remember to come back with a follow-up. I’d love to see more info on this topic. Some links:http://www.earthstoneovens.comhttp://www.mugnaini.com/http://www.renatos.com/brick/brick.htmhttp://www.bravo-systems.com/wood.htmhttp://table.mpr.org/souptonuts/kitchen_pizzaoven.htmlhttp://www.agt.net/public/coffee/pizza.htmhttp://www.aibonline.org/Services/Online/OvenContacts.htmI know I'm not giving you the exact answer you're looking for...but if I were doing this myself, I'd buy a modular unit and build the base, surround, and chimney myself. If you do try to build the fire section yourself, I'd try to at least get a spec sheet showing more detailed measurements of one of these modular units, and go from there...just use the right brick and the right mortar for the fire section of the unit.Regards, Mongo

Thanks a ton for the info CLS and Mongo. I'll look into what you've given me and get back if I have any success (or notable failures!).

Whole Earth what ?
Catalog ? Where you did find that ???
Where I can did find one ???
*Luka,Are you being facetious? You've never heard of the Whole Earth Catalog? Amazon.com sells a few varieties. Used to be consistently stocked in bookstores, but I don't know about now....Rich Beckman
*Rich,Not being facetious at all. I used to LOVE getting the new copy of the whole earth catalog. It ranked right up there with the new copy of mother earth news. They have been unavailable for a long time. Or so I thought. If there are new ones, I want one!!!!: )M.E.N. has basicaly sold out to yuppydom. It's just not the same mag as it was in the early 70's. But I'd like to get a look at the catalog if available.
*The Whole Earth Catalog led to more Whole Earth Catalogs and Whole Earth Reveiw, now "Whole Earth" It's a quaterly magazine that deals with "whole" systems. Each issue delves into a topic (Winter '99 was "Vital Fires" hence wood ovens) web address http://www.wholeearthmag.com.Jerry
*Thank you.: )
