Loft Ladder/Stair
MADE OF OAK AND RECYCLED FIR, THIS LOFT STAIR|LADDER REINTERPRETS THE ICONIC SHIP LADDER. THE STAIR IS SUPPORTED ENTIRELY BY OAK 1x4s INSTALLED AT AN APPROXIMATELY 85° ANGLE. THE STAIR TREADS ARE FIR 2×4 STUDS RECOVERED FROM THE CONSTRUCTION THAT SPAN BETWEEN THE ANGLED OAK 1x4s AND 1×4 “CRIPPLES” ATTACHED TO THE WALL. FIR PLATES ON THE FLOOR FIX THE BASE OF THE ANGLED MEMBERS. AS THE STAIR RISES, THE ANGLED 1x4s CREATE A FAN EFFECT THAT IS BOTH DELICATE AND VERY STRONG. A 9” LAG SCREW PASSES THROUGH EACH TREAD INTO THE FOLLOWING ANGLED OAK MEMBER TO PREVENT MOVEMENT ALONG THE LONG AXIS AND EFFECTIVELY STIFFEN THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY. FINALLY, THE OAK MEMBERS ARE EXTENDED AT EACH ALTERNATING SECOND STEP TO PROVIDE HAND SUPPORT FOR SECURITY. ALONG THE WALL, THESE EXTENSIONS ARE CAPPED WITH 1 1/2” OAK DOWEL “HANDLES,” WHILE A FLAT 1×4 ON THE OPEN SIDE PROVIDES A HANDRAIL.
MORE THAN A MERE SCULTURAL SOLUTION, HOWEVER, THE DESIGN WAS DRIVEN BY A PROBLEM OF PROVIDING ACCESS TO THE LOFT FROM A 12’x14’ BEDROOM WITHOUT CRAMPING THE DOORWAY, INVITING HEAD BUMPS ON THE UNDERSIDE OF A STRINGER, USING THE WALL FOR SUPPORT, OR INSTALLING A REGULAR LADDER, WHICH WAS NEITHER SAFE NOR PRACTICAL.
