Back yard walls, arbors and pergola

The pergola and brick patio are on the lower level of the back yard just outside the kitchen door.  The yard and patio face south and the pergola in in the south east corner of the patio, framed on two sides by rock walls.
With a fireplace and some additional seating it makes for a great outdoor room in the summer.
The west side of the backyard abuts the alley and the screening is provided by a garden wall with trellis on top for climbing roses
The upper part of the garden is a more formal room surrounded by perennials and anchored by a fountain.
Around the edges of the rooms of the upper garden are smaller, more intimate places to sit.

After putting the overhead utility lines underground, we started over again with the back yard.  It's organized into two levels, with the lower level close to the house paved in brick on sand and the upper level laid out in a couple of outdoor rooms made by planting and paths.  The lower level has this pergola along with lots of outdoor furniture and a basketball hoop.  The upper level has lots of perennials, a few small trees and a garden shed that will soon be published in Fine Homebuilding.  The levels are separated from each other and from neighboring spaces by dry laid basalt walls.
