The whole house was designed around a cache of various construction materials saved and found over the years to be integrated eventually in the designing and building of my own home someday. (the whole house abounds with details and stories about creative reuse that are deserving of a coffee table book in and of itself )…The kitchen is on second floor which offers a more commanding view of the water, but offered more difficulty in taking out the trash. Now once a few rules are followed the trash simply disappears after you close the cabinet door ( that is my wife’s take on the design, of course my nick name is the Trash Man! for many reasons….her nick name is Git Wood, because of how simple I made it for keeping the second floor woodstoves fires going in the winter …but that is another story and design challenge ) Other details of importance were maintaining sufficient aisle space for 2 cooks, and providing efficient storage space. Both my wife and I are artistically inclined so providing lighted wall space for paintings and shelves and alcoves for sculptures was paramount in the design. I surprised Git Wood with a pullout drawer for storing a 100 ft coiled house to water all her beloved houseplants.

all photos by John Spalding... overall view from left to right ..lowered height baking center, info drop zone with wine cork- framed wet erase board, island cooking and eatin bar, cookbook and internet desk, appliance garage in corner , clean up and prep area with garden view and 2 huge 3'x8' skylights above...hawk silhouettes on glass is to deter bird collisions
KITCHEN VIEW OF THE OPEN FLOOR PLAN ARCHITECTURE IN THE REST OF HOUSE BOTH INDOORS AND OUT
tall cathedral ceiling allows for interesting stepped open soffiting sculpture gallery and view of the eastern sky offering an abundance of natural light..the whole house is designed around a lucky find cache of large Pella Architectural series WIndows and Skylights that were from a deconstructed illegally built Pella Sunroom
birds eye view from the second floor guest suite ...Note the marble tile book matching on the counters and the view of the exterior custom deck wavy stair railing...this would make for a good cooking show camera angle yes?
Note the previously used Kohler cast iron overmount sink installed in an undermount techique under the large format heavy marble tiles which were left over from construction at a Macy's Store years ago and found stored in a tilesetters back yard for years. I purchased all he had and sorted them for bookmatching the grain for the countertops and checker board fashion for the floors in foyer and great rm...final step was to acid etch the counter tops to prevent scratching and sealing to prevent staining...NOTE the white door bell button to right of sink which when pressed activates a recirc pump to push the cold water out of the hot water line in a closed loop, hence no wasting water and instantly hot at the dishwasher (pump provides instant hot water at all faucets in house and each faucet also has its own button)..there is a passthru window to screen porch for party time...and also noteworthy are the 50 custom curved patinated copper door and drawer pulls
