Tips & Techniques

Trimming pocket doors

Issue 6

If you have to trim more than 1 in. from a pocket door (to clear a carpet for example), do it in place. First, mark your cut with a knife and place your circular saw on the floor, blade low and horizontal, as shown in the drawing. My large saw clears the floor by 1-1/2 in. and my little one by 1-1/4 in., which allows plenty of room for the carpet. Position the saw with its foot flush with the face of the door and open the blade guard. Turn on the saw and, holding it firmly, have someone slowly close the door. This will cut most of the door bottom; the last bit can be trimmed with a Sawzall, a jigsaw, or a keyhole saw.
