I enjoyed your article Running New Wires Through Old Walls. Here’s a variation on the weighted-line technique, which I find works well for running wire through an enclosed wall to a location one floor down. From below, I drill a 1/2-in.-dia. hole through the bottom plate into the stud bay. Through this hole, I insert a telescopic pointer that has a magnet on the end. When my partner lowers the weighted line into the wall cavity, I easily move the pointer around until it captures the chain on the end of the line. I then am able to pull the chain through the hole to attach the new wire so that my partner can pull it up.
