Here’s a new one: a surfboard built from building scraps.
Longtime contractor and Breaktime member Huck today posted photos of an unlikely project he’s working on from 2x6s and plywood: a hollow-core wooden surfboard.
The project is illustrated with a series of photos that walk you through the process including cutting the rail pieces, gluing and and clamping the rails, cutting the “rocker” curve on the bottom of the rail, adding “fish bones,” working with custom surfboard sawhorses, making the interior ribs from 1/8 in. plywood, the I-beam construction of the hollow interior, and running an underlayment.
Here’s a taste of Huck’s must-see photo essay. To view all the photos, keep up with his progress, and ask questions, visit the forum thread (free registration required):
P.S. A native of Bakersfield, Calif., Huck is about a two-hour drive from my college town of San Luis Obispo, Calif. where the surf is epic, so I’m sure this board will get put to good use.
