I have recently come up with a new use for old double-hung sash weights: I use them for ballast for holding down tarps. I simply attach a 3/16-in. nylon cord to the sash weight and the other end to a spring clamp using an anchor bend knot. I heat the ends of the nylon cord to melt and seal them to prevent them from fraying. Then I attach the spring clamp to the tarp at intervals of about 3 ft. around the perimeter of the tarp. To achieve solid anchor points, I fold the tarp on itself a couple of times before attaching the spring clamp, and where possible, I rest the weight on the tarp.
Considering all the windows that I’ve replaced recently, I think I’ll have to start making wind chimes with the rest of them.
