The National Association of Home Builders Pillars of the Industry Awards competition is now two decades old and will, with its 2011 edition, honor multifamily industry professionals in 35 award categories. That is a lot of parsing of multifamily specialties, but the competition has grown in size – there are five new categories this year alone – and in scope, with the contest open to multifamily developers, property management companies, investors and lenders, architects, marketing companies, and interior designers.
NAHB says that the five new award categories were added to the 2011 contest “to reflect the evolution of the multifamily market.” They are: “Best Example of Green Building Concepts,” “Best Transition from Sales Community to Rental,” “Best Workforce Housing,” “Best Lifestyle Programming,” and “Regional Property Manager of the Year.”
The 35 categories are grouped into five general areas: developer awards (with 20 categories, including three new ones), firm awards (four categories), marketing awards (nine categories, including one new one), and individual awards (two categories, including one new one).
Signing up
The competition entry deadline is May 13, and all entries must be submitted online at www.nahb.org/pillarsawards. Entry fees are $295 for NAHB member, $395 for nonmembers. NAHB says award recipients will be honored during a two-part virtual awards ceremony webcast in the Fall. (Click here for a feature story, published by Multihousing Professional magazine, about the winners of the 2010 contest.)
Eligibility requirements are fairly straightforward. As noted in the contest brochure: “Apartments and condos or marketing activities that pertain to a condo or rental apartment community that first became available for sale or for rent after January 1, 2008, may be nominated. Judges evaluate developer award entries on design, development, execution, and success in the marketplace, based on individual category criteria. Winning entries in the Developer Award categories will be automatically nominated for the ‘Best Multifamily Community of the Year’ Award.
“Marketing Award entries are evaluated for creativity, execution, and outcome, based on individual category criteria. Property management professionals can self-nominate or be nominated for Individual awards for achievement and effectiveness in management. Development or management companies can self-nominate or be nominated by their clients for awards that honor the ‘year’s best work.’ ”
