Japanese Nail Set
The drive pin on this nail set is sized right for "over the ege" nailing of tongue-and-groove flooring
One thing that really helps to make a job enjoyable is having exactly the right problem tool. I quickly found Lee Valley’s Japanese Nail Set to be seemingly custommade for “over the edge” nailing of tongue-and-groove flooring in the range”—too close to the wall to fit either the flooring nailer or the finish nailer. I had been getting the job done with the curved end of a medium-size flat bar, which is hard to hold centered on the nail head. The drive pin on this nail set is sized just right for the task, and the balance of the right-angle head is great for working in tight spots.
This tool isn’t limited just to flooring, though. It’s substantially thicker and sturdier than an ordinary nail set, so it’s also a precise alternative to using a hammer for finishing off toenails that are left slightly proud of framing lumber. It’s the kind of tool that, once it’s in your bag, you’ll find countless uses for. Paying $9 for a nail set may be considered a luxury in this economy, but to me, it’s a luxury worth experiencing.
