Builders Gather in Washington
More than 750 builders from around the country were in Washington on June 5 to attend the annual National Association of Home Builders Legislative Conference and to ask Congress to support proposals that will aid the recovery of the housing industry.
NAHB Chairman Rick Judson said that a strong housing market “is critical to create jobs and boost economic growth.”
In all, there were 300 meetings scheduled between builders and their congressional representatives. Among the policies that NAHB would like Congress to support:
- Continuation of the mortgage-interest tax deduction and the Low Income Housing Tax Credit.
- A continued flow of credit for home buyers and federal support for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
- Immigration reform that protects U.S. borders, makes U.S. employers “accountable only for the identity and work authorization status of their direct employees,” and allows employers to recruit undocumented workers when they can’t find enough domestic workers.
- Support for a bill that would help solve credit problems for builders who can’t get construction loans: H.R. 1255 in the House of Representatives and S. 1002 in the Senate.
