The diminutive Ruggles House in out of the way Columbia Falls, Maine is an absolute gem of Federal Style architecture and Adamesque ornamentation. Designed by housewright Aaron S. Sherman and built in 1818 for Judge Thomas Ruggles, the house is surely one of the finest historic homes in Maine. The staircase is breathtaking and takes up almost a third of the entire building. The house is filled with light, passing through Palladian windows and illuminating the elegant rooms. Sadly, Ruggles was only able to enjoy the house for one year before his untimely passing in 1820.
