It’s the second day of our tour of Habitat for Humanity sites nationwide during the annual Home Builders Blitz. Today, we visited Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where members of the Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem are building four new homes. Each simple, decent home is about 1200 sq. ft., with two to three bedrooms and two baths.
Five builders are engaged in this build. All competitors in their day-to-day businesses, but while partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County for Home Builders Blitz, they’re working together along with their subs and suppliers to get four homes done in one week. And believe me, they will get it done. We had a little rain this morning, but that didn’t slow things down.
Rich Tozier of Sonoma Building Company said, “It’s not really about what I get out of it. Yeah, I get some publicity, but I believe we’re very fortunate to be in our line of work. As builders, we want to give back to the community.”
“Do it again?” asked Michael Enscore of Veritas Construction. “Yeah! It was fun, and it’s amazing to work with our competitors.”
Chris Thompson with PCI Builders added: “Our attitude is that we’re all in this together. Our HBA is 100% involved.”
All of these builders understand that the work they do today is good for the community and ultimately their own businesses.
Many thanks to Isenhour Homes, Sonoma Building Company, Veritas Construction, PCI Builders, and Adams Egloff for helping create homeownership opportunities for four Winston-Salem families!

If you’re equipped with the right attitude no rain can stop you from fulfilling your mission. Steve Thomas Rooney and the rest of the people working on this project have been gifted with noble hearts. What really matters is doing something that makes the world a better place, and if you know and have the passion to use your craft, your trade a builder or renovator, than get out and make it happen. The annual Home Builders Blitz, and its spokesman Steve Thomas Rooney, along with everybody that has been involved, are an example of how one society should treat its members.
