Is it possible to upgrade traditional frame and panel doors to 1/2 hour fire resistance? I want to retain their looks rather than replace them with bland proprietary items

Hi Mik,
Yes, there are many door designs that are rated for 1/2 hour and greater.
Just go to your local reputable lumber yard and they will have a large number of doors for you to choose from.

Hi Gabe,
The lamentable lack of detail in my message handicapped your efforts to help me.I need to know if is possible to modify my existing doors using some kind of intumescent paint or incombustible board. The frames are 1 3/4"thick but the panels are only 7/8" or so.
*No.Sorry. I've been down that road. Rated doors must be rated by accredited manf.s. Custom doors, made by millwork shops or carpenters, do not fit into that category. NO building inspector, at least in my neighborhood, will accept such a door (they used to accept site-applied metal skins, but do not anymore). There are many many designs that manf. offer that are rated.Good luck,Gary

Hi Mik
Here doors have to have ULC rating to be acceptable for fire ratings.
Sorry, but I don't have any confidence in sprays or coatings that claim to give any type of fire ratings. You have to remember that you have no guaranty that you can achieve perfect coverage for consistent protection.
If you are looking for 1/2 hour protection, I assume that you are concerned about the safety of your family, therefore.......

*What is the occupancy - multi-family residential? I he building is not already sprinklered, ahj's will often trade away other features for a sprinkler system and in a small residential occupancy, the new 13D or 13R is too expensive. Just a thought if saving doors is high priority.
*Mik - The 'real thing' (stile-and-rail rated fire doors) are only made by a few of the big companies - my best experience so far, in this case w/60 minute doors, was with Eggers. They did a beautiful job with custom moldings to match existing inset panel doors, circa 1837. A few drawbacks, they are very heavy due to the composition rated core plus veneer, and very expensive (don't ask).Of course, you can paint your existing doors w/intumescent paint but no one can really tell you what you have when you are done. Can you post more about what you are trying to protect?Jeff
*Hi Mik,1/2 rated, panelled doors sell for about 75 bucks US out here, not too much to give piece of mind.....Gabe

Thanks to all of you for your advice.I am a small landlord in Paisley,Scotland.I think I will just have to bite the bullet and wrestle in some proprietary 50kg doors, what fun.
Best regards Mik.
