Mike, Instead of tongue and groove, why not use a ship lap joint? It’ll be easier to make (router or table saw / dado blade) and look just as nice. One tip, what ever the joint, stain or finith the tongue / under lap while you are laying the floor – this way as the floor expands and contracts the finish will stay constant and won’t show any embassassing “tan lines”.

You can't blind nail shiplap. 1/2" flooring is common. If you are making it yourself, I would suggest you cut the tongue and groves the same as manufactured flooring. That way an ordinary nailer will work.

Mike,
True, you can't blind nail a shiplap floor, but you could use some really nice wrought headed nails. (I happen to like that look)

Want a new floor in my kitchen and have the opportunity to get some 1/2" quarter sawn maple for free. Has anyone out there worked with 1/2" hardwood floors? Do you just use a smaller tongue and groove or is there some other way to install the floor.
Thanks,
Mike
*Mike E.,Most of the decorative hardwood floor panels that I've seen are 1/4" T&G. 1/2" is that much better. You can't beat the price.Enjoy,Ed. Williams

My grandfather did a floor with some old heart pine he was given. It was about half inch after milling. He glued it down on a good substrait and used a pin nailer to hold it in place till the glue dried. the nail holes were small enough that you cand see them.
