I need a lighter more portable miter saw than my bosch 10 inch slide. Any one like one or another of these smaller saws better? The makita seems to be the lightest at 24#.

I picked up a DW 703 10" compound about a month ago, believe me, every 10" saw feels weightless compared to a slider.
DW has come out with a new model 713, and the older model is being sold off at HD and others for $100 less than retail.

I second the DW scms.
I have and old 703 I think and it is still as good as new.

Ok Gord and Eric, I went and tried out the makita and the dewalt. I came home with the dewalt. Thanks for the advice.
Paul
What kind of deal did you get?
Did you get the 703 or the 713?
Gord
Gord, I got the 703. The closest HD is 80 miles away and they did not have one anyway. I finally found one left at a lumberyard I rarely use cause it is also about 25 miles north but he had it listed at 219 and sold it to me for 170. There awas a makita 1040 close to home but I liked the dewalt scale and detent handle and fence and table and...
now these guys are making think I shoulda looked at the little craftsman....na. the dewalt will serve lme well. thanks for the plug.

I have no idea about capacities or the fact that it's a Craftsman, but I saw a 7 1/4" chop saw the other day. I'm not sure if anyone else makes one this small.
Jamie
I have that Craftsman 71/4" miter saw and it's a great little saw. It's like carrying a circular saw around. The capacity isn't that large and certainly can't do the job of a 10" or 12" chop or slider, but it does have a compound cut and it's great for the small stuff up to 31/2" especially when you're trimming a room on the 3rd floor of a house. It's surprisingly accurate.
How much are they? Sounds like a good candidate to replace my cheap Ryobi 10" if it will ever die.
Jamie
It was about $85 as I recall. I would never use it except for small stuff. What's so great about it is that it's so small & light.
I bought one of those little saws on line from sears.com. Saw it in the last FHB and thought it looked a lot better than lugging my 12" around.
It was on clearance + another 10% off for internet ordering. With tax delivered to my local catalog store it was $65.
Picked it up yesterday, haven't opened it yet but it's light.
