10 inch sliding compound mitersaws
does anybody know of any websites that sells 10″ scm saws for about 300 dollars. i like makita and bosch. amazon sells the hitachi saw for $299, it supposed to be an excellent saw but i dont like that small fence. any replies are greatly appreciated. thanks

These are the most likely two sources, you'll have to watch for specials or give 'em a call. I bought my Makita LS1013L from HDT last summer for $350 - & that came with a free makita sawzall. Check ebay also, occasional deals.

I think I paid about $500 for my 10" Hitachi slider a dozen years ago. No doubt, the fence is lame...it is a great saw though; a smooth operator. Great cuts and perfect accuracy--years of hard use and abuse--and never had to adjust it, ever.
I do use aux. fences and jigs on it. I use 1/2" MDO for this...light, strong & stable...and the smooth signboard surface is great for writing on (notes, lines for repeat cuts, etc.).
Hitachi forced me into the aux. fence & jig business, but I think it has actually improved my work and efficiency. I would buy another Hitachi slider in a minute...if mine ever breaks down.
Basswood, where's the blade guard? Geez that's an accident waiting to happen. Be careful!

That might be a Hitachi thing. The guard on my 8 1/2 Hitachi sucked so bad I had to remove it.
That guard is bad. I have the newer 10" slider and the guard is great. I've used the same model as Basswood for many hours too. The guard is fine.

My guard was sticking, hanging up and in the way on some compound/bevel cuts. I was used to not having guards on the generation of tools without them or tools with such bad gaurds they were removed...so when I had problems with mine I removed it.I know this is considered foolhearty in the present age. I am a bad example in this regard. In the last two or three years I have noticed some FHB articles include miter saws with gaurds removed and blade housings altered to increase cutting capacity (Jim Chestnut for instance)...probably just for illustrative clarity. ; ) I know this doesn't mean it is a good idea.I do keep my hands far away.Do not let others use my saw.Use zero clearance aux. fences/tables for tricky cuts.Wear safety glasses & ear plugs for all cutting and nailing, etc.Being a careful fool.
That's what I figured. I'd rather be a jerk and tell you to be careful than to not say anything and see you get hurt. I do the same thing at work. The guys love it (not!)

I do think the Hitachi 10" slider is the finest, smoothest, cutting rig out there. I cut the 16 pieces of moldings in this picture with it. Glass smooth cuts and each piece fit perfectly the first time. Tight joints and not a single piece had to be recut (someone here schooled me on getting rope molding to match up at the miters).I love doing this kind of work...good to be reminded that one accident could end it.
That is some nice cutting! I can't wait to try out the Hitachi myself!Handyman, painter, wood floor refinisher, property maintenance in Tulsa, OK
What's another $200 when buying a tool?
If you have a true need for a sliding compound miter saw, it's worth the stretch to buy a better saw.
You can't go wrong with Hitachi, Bosch, or Makita.
I wish I had a reason;
my flaws are open season
Look at the thread "What's the best chopsaw?"
I think there is a link in there somewhere to a Hitachi Slider for $299.

Damn, that was an awesome buy!
I should take my head out of my arse.
I had no idea of what is a normal price for that saw.
