greetings fellows laborers! bobski here, born and raised in conn, living in suffolk, va. bought a dream home in the historic district 2 years ago, built in 1904, im 4th owner, no insulation, 5500 sq ft, 10 ft cellings, 8″ crown moulding, 2 story, finished attic, slate roof, 8″ clapboards, 55 windows with lead wts, 1/2 basement, french well, gas forced air heat, 7 capped fireplaces, 27 rooms, 1.5 acres, english formal garden with maze, and carriage house with hay loft. ok, there are the stats. retired navy parachutist, unemployed by choice, working on the house myself. schooled by my father on handtools, basic shop, and home building in conn. the kind of dad that if you didnt move fast enough, he’d paint your sneakers. you know the deal. i count 66 projects left to get this house in order. ive nailed about 100 of them already, but some are stumping me. how should i approach this: part 1, part 2? my absolute biggest problem is dampness and interior sweat. all the paint is peeling off all the way down to the lead base paint! i cant stop it. numerous owners have painted it with latex, then, oil, then latex. at the rate its peeling, i figure the house will repaint itself back to the original lead paint finish in 3 years! lol. as far as the exterior, same problem. lead, oil, latex, latex etc…its just peeling off down to bare wood in areas. im told that the cause was that as the house breathes, the paint doesnt give, and it cracks. constant breathing due to lack of insulation is compounding this. some say strip it down to wood and start over. some say why remove a good barrier of paint and just spot paint. i need your inputs!!! interior and exterior advise please!! and thanks to dayle in carolina for sharing this website with me!
