Anyone know what the small diamonds at just under 19 1/4″ on center on some tape measures are used for?

Yeah. It's for layout.
5 studs spaced at that dimension is your 8 foot sheet. An alternative to 16" and 24".
*Stephen: The diamonds represent one fifth of eight feet. A lot of the new engineered "I" beam floor joists allow for that pattern instead of 16" o.c.I see Mad Dog beat me to that explanation by a couple of minutes so this second paragraph is a post script.
*Such competition! This place is repeating itself, this one is from a few months ago. 19.2"
*They used to use the 19 3/16" layout years ago as the standard for floor joists, rafters, and ceiling joists (at least here).I have some really old Stanley tape measures that have the diamonds, so they are not a new thing. Oh well...James
