Working on a house today where I reshingled this turret 20 years ago with red label , red cedar shingles .
Still got some life in it I guess .

Few people understand it. Nobody agrees what it is, how to learn about it, or who's responsible for it. It has never been more important

Slip some copper cap up those hips and it will be good for another 30 at least.
Nice work. It's interesting as we age to see work we did back then wondering how long it really would last.
"When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking." — Sherlock Holmes, 1896
Eric ,
This house is not owned by the group who I did the work for back then .
It's on the market again now and a bunch of bad leaks developed in the slate roof below -- so I'm here relaying an area there .
The turret isn't going to get any attention , but hadn't seen it up close for a long time , so I was interested in how it held up .

That's not the same place with the tarred up chimney is it?
Thanks for all the great threads and photos Slate. Whenever I see one of your threads I'm all over it.
It's good to see the craft done with pride. You should consider finding a youngin' to take under your wing.

Eric ,
No -- that house is about 5 blocks from this house .
Thank you very much for all the compliments - hope my head will fit thru that 2 / 8 door !
I would like to find a good younger person to share some of the workload with and be able to take over in 10 years when I don't want to climb anymore .
Have a great 4th Holiday Eric .
Best regards , Walter
Nice work.
I've being slapping down 18" Perfections for the las week or so. I see the quality has diminished something fierce since 20 yrs ago. Ihad more than one bundle of half sap wood ( half a shingle, even 3" wide, with 1 1/2 sap) and bundles of what I call "dead tree brown" Those real brittle chocolate ones that shatter easy.
Some flat sawn with sap, and knot holes, but only a few. So far. I had hoped to get down 2 sq. a day , 12/12 over breather...shoot, I'm lucky to do ONE sq. What with having to hand nail the eaves due to gunnails being too long, and jacking the roof AND repapering as I go up, the old paper was beyond it's useful life span.
Zorro is losing his butt ($$$) on this one.
Edit: have a swell 4th, gonna be here in the rain, cleaning the shop out... and making cupolas..

Zorro ,
Too bad about your butt !!
It's easy to think that one's production is more than we're physically capable of doing .
Good luck with your endeavors today , Walter
Your's is only the second person other than myself I have known to weave the hips like that on a display roof with red cedar

Those hips looked really crisp back when we had finished .
Looks like they are being crowded by the rain swollen ones in the filed right now. Probably are the wettest they've been since you laid them!

I bet they are .
If it hadn't been for that 4" storm a while ago I wouldn't be relaying the lowest 5 ' of slates off to the right.
