Guys,
I am replacing the rook on my home (4/12 slope). I have budgeted for a 25 year Elk Prestique II or GAF Architectural grade shingle. Question; is it
worth upgrading to a 30 or 40 year shingle (at $10 per square for the 30 and $20 per square for the 40). Also wanted to know how important drip
edge is behind the gutters and along rakes. Both will be covered with Alcoa Aluminum.
Thanks from a novice.

PC, Consumer Reports did some testing on roofing materials and it looked like many of the the 25yr performed as well as the 40yr. In fact I remember the Certainteed 25yr did better than their 40yr. Compared to the labor and total costs, $20 more isn't much. The roof is such a large visual item on a home and I feel dissapointed in a builder who puts cheap looking shingles on. The Elk 25yr is pretty good looking though, I'd just go for the 40yr for the looks.
*depends on your plans... gonna outlive a 25 year roof ?do you really want to go thru this again in 25 years of will you be dead and in your grave in 40 ?yes.. drip edge on rakes and eaves.. ice & water too..spend the money on the materials... the labor is pretty much the same..but the installers are not..
*As an addendum to Mike's point, in case you think you will be selling sometime. Someone posted somewhere on this board once upon a time that a great roof will not raise the selling price of a house, but a poor roof will lower the selling price. When I bring this up with people locally, no one has argued the point.Rich Beckman
