I am rebuilding the deck on the 2nd floor porch of my mother’s house. The original deck was 3/4 cdx, asphalt roll roofing sealed with roofing tar then a pressure treated deck “floating” on top of the roofing. The floor joists were tapered down 2″ over thier 8′ run to give the roofing a slope, then the deck was tapered in reverse to give a level floor. Water has been getting in under the roofing and now the cdx is rotten as well as the top of the joists. Thankfully the top plate of the first floor wall looks OK. I plan to sister in new joists with the same taper and deck with 3/4 cdx again but… what would be a water shedding system that would be rodent resistant and water proof? I was looking at the article on the net zero house in the last FHB and wondered if the roof under thier sod roof would work. Any ideas? Thanks

first find out where the water came in. For waterproofing the deck I would go with a Schluter system (check http://www.schluter.com) and cover with tiles. No more re-finishing, durable and weatherproof.
Most problems come in the area where the door meets the deck. Often there is not enough space under the sill to properly seal, or on the jambsides
Thanks, I wound up putting down a sheet of roof membrane in on piece on the subfloor. When you suggested tiles did you mean like pvc flooring tiles? With the interlocking edges? I want to put down something over the membrane that will look good but won't collect birdseed etc and hold the water. Definetly looking for suggestions for flooring over the membrane!
the Schluter system works with thinset. It in itself is a waterproof membrane. You then install frostproof ceramic tiles over it
It aooeared that the water came originally came in through a squirrel hole through the roll roofing. The floating deck over the asphalt gave them cover to work on the floor. Lots of birdseed as an added bonus. Also the sleepers for the deck went across the slope of the floor and made dams that held the water until it could go into the hole. Then the asphalt held the moisture in until it could spread laterally. The extent of the damage was amazing.
torchdown roll roofing! Not hard to do, just use care when playing with fire. But it has the advantage of being easily repaired, you can weld in a patch with a plumber's torch. Replace the floating deck with sections you can lift out thus easing maintenance.
