I am planning to buy a 3-1/4″ portable planer. Can anyone with experience with them advise me on what features I should look for or recommend a particular brand or model? I am more interested in quality than price.

Al,
The DeWalt is a sweet machine. The guys on our crews just rave about them. I've also got some 12" Deltas which do fine. I have a friend that has a Ryobi that works great. For my money........DeWalt.

*ya know A.S. I've got the same question.I used another guy's planer once and loved it. I'm not sure what size, but it was a Porter Cable and had a metal housing with a shape that fit perfect in my hand. I've looked around recently but haven't seen it or one like it, nor one with that perfect fitting shape from any manufacturer. All the planers I see now seem to be two handed jiggers. oh wellgabe
*Al,First off, I think Ed was thinking of portable thickness planers when he posted his initial reply. I have the Bosch 3296 and it does a fine job. Being able to direct the waste discharge to either side has saved some gnarly cleanups. I read a review where the winner was a Metabo. Their stuff tends to be very strong, durable and expensive. Dealers are harder to find than most brands. A lot depends on what you intend to use it for. The Metabo would shine if you are hogging loads of wood. Festo also makes a cool tool, recently reviewed in FHB or FWW. It can rabbet to something like 1.5". Festo costs a lot also.Bill
*ooops,Yeah, I was thinking of thickness planers. My mistake. I've got a large Makita power plane, but I'm not sure it cuts 3 1/4" wide. It's a good tool though.I'll read more carefully in the future. Sorry Al.Ed. Williams
