I have framed up the walls for my screened porch (24″ knee walls) with three window bays on each side of the porch. The vertical framing for the windows is PT 4×4’s….yeah I know they move more than Michael Jackson. I was planning on trimming the windows out this weekend with 1x pine when I noticed that one of them has warped/bowed/dried etc. Flippin’ SYP !!
The bow is about 3/8″ from the top of the knee wall/window sill to the header. I am throwing around different ideas on how to deal with this.
I could always trim the outside ofthe bow with the sawsall…trim off about 3/8″ since it will be trimmed with 1x anyways.
What is the acceptable way to deal with this…besides ripping down that wall and reframing?
Thanks

Box them in with cedar or some other weather resistant wood. This will make them appear to be larger posts on top. Size will depend on thickness of wood used to box, and how far off the bow is.
It would probably look like a 6 x 6 post on top of the knee wall, but cutting them down would make them a different size than the bottom too.
I've got two on my porch that are off WAY more than 3/8". I let them bow as much as they are going to, and am about to box them in with cedar.
Just a thought...

*Power planer... or, dado/plane down out the pine wrap... SYP may warp a bit, but it is strong...
*Or cut an angled kerf 2" or so deep on the bowed side and drive a screw across the slot to pull out the bow. Keep making kerfs until the bow is gone.
*Thanks for the reply's.James - I am boxing them in unfortunately cedar is really expensive in my area so I have to use 1x KD EWP. I think I will trim down the side with the largest warp just enough to make hiding it easier. The knee walls will have T&G on them so none of the 4x4 posts will show. They are just there for the frame. I'm going to prime all the trim pieces on all six sides and make sure I make great caulk joints.I appreciate the help.SJ
