Hi All and Happy Holidays!
I’ve been off the board lately – spending all my time getting final designs ready for architectural and permits. I have designed a fantastic kitchen – small and very concise for our cooking styles. My dilemma – finding a quality 30″downdraft, gas, convention range in stainless steel. I have my heart set on this configuration – plus it would be perfect for my triangular island. Plus, I demo’d the new 650 btu simmer burner and want that along with the usual 16,500 btu burner.
Should I ask Santa and his elves to build one or does anyone have suggestions?

You can get separate "pop-up" downdraft vent systems that mount behind the stove, they don't need to be built-in.
And if you can find the parts with the right height you don't need to have a "stove", but you can have a built-in cook top mounted over a built-in oven.
Doing those 2 thing drastically opens up the "range" of possibilities.
Thanks, Bill. I thought of that, but it also increases costs considerably. I'm already bleeding money on this project and am hoping to find a marriage between products and price. If all else fails, I will do exactly what you suggest.

That's no lie. Gets into some tricky undercounter space coordination, too. I don't like the "back" popup units in an island. The whole point of having the cooktop in the island is so meddlesome huests can help stir things. Hard to do that with the vent hood in the way.
I'm also not a big fan of the 30" DD ranges. Yes they have a place (it's a narrow, tight, won't fit anywhere but right here space); I've just found them to be a little underwhleming to cook with. The problem, IMHO, is that there's just too many compromises trying to get all that in one 30" package. Just the way it is, though.
But then, my perfect kitchen would confuse many people.
Keep on the appliance people, check on the manufacturers on the internet; and hold the appliance people's feet to the fire. Keep reminding them that they're getting just this one shot at you for the sale. Otherwise, then seem to spend a great deal of effort ignoring what you want to sell you what they have.
Ok, just browsed Jenn-Air; they have a couple that might work, but some tough sticker shock ($2200± msrp). Dang it--failed to check width.
Ok, back, here's one I found: http://www.jennair.com/products/images/8101p534-60.pdf
It's a dual fuel modular unit 30" wide with down draft. So, it is possible to get what you want. "At a reasonable price" may be harder.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
I use a GE profile 30" down draft. there are not many quality units to choose from in this size unfortunatley. I liked this model a little better than the JennAir.

Profile! Bingo, I knew I knew the brand, just couldn't recall.
It's good product; I just wouldn't want to live with one. I could, just wouldn't with the choice.
Mind you, I still miss having a dedicated broiler (or three) from my chef days . . .
Not enough to figure them into a/my dream kitchen--just nostalgia, which is always rosier.
Since I didn't say, I will now--my "dream" cooking appliances would be a single 30" convection wall oven; a single 24" electric wall oven, a two burner electric range flanking a center downdraft with a two-burner gas cooktop unit on the other side. Four cooking strategies--four cooking options--wierd, like I said.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
