Hi All,
Anyone see this old house a few days back, the Austin TX project? Norm was talking to the roofing guy who said the house was going to take 26-28 square of standing seam metal roof, price at 350/sq would bring it in around 10 grand. They showed them ripping a two layer roof off earlier. Seems to good to be true, In NJ I was quoted more like 1200/sq.

Amazing the difference from one part of the country to another, was the cost of living in line with the wages?
I'd be willing to bet that $350/sq was raw costs (no OH & profit) above and beyond what was donated only.

To some degree. I was renting a whole house - nice brick place, with utilities included for $35/mo, a third of what it had been for just an apt in Florida, and my wages in FL had been close to 2.5 times as much. But gas and groceries were close to the same.

When was that? 1963?

And when I moved to San Marcos TX (roughly inbetween San Antonio and Austin) a few years ago I was told to go up to Austin to work, stay out of the San Antonio area! Who ever told me that was right on, I made very good money in Austin but heard bad things about the wages of a cabinet/carpenter guy in SA.
Funny how there isnt that much space between the two places but there worlds apart on pay.

Yeah, I've heard that about Texas... but there I ain't and here I'd figure ~$750/square for 26 gauge standing seam furnished and installed, no tearoff.
I was wondering if the guy was quoting just the insatll and didn't include the tearoff, maybe that was done by the GC's crew?
I live 12 blocks from the house. Never got to see Norm. Standing seam at $350 is not that uncommon. That price is for some thin material-probably straight galvanized.
Wages down here are less. Workers Comp is not required-neither is general liability. Most guys are 1099 and not employees and many are not legal. That life in Austin.

material was a zinc aluminum alloy if I remember correctly, not sure they mentioned the gauge. I think Norm is the real identity of Piffin, see him at one of the BT fests.
I hope to make it to one of fests and meet many of the great personalties at Breaktime

I watched that show and couldnt pick out the area where it was taking place - give me a rough idea.
Right after I saw that show I turned the channel to HGTV and they were doing a flip in Austin. Got a double dose of Austin building that day!
Thanks
Doug
The house is on the corner of Avenue H and 41st in the Hyde Park Neighborhood-about 15 blocks due north of the University. A friend of a friend actually bought one of the flip houses that were on TV.
