Anyone using these? My primary use would be setting up dust barriers, but could do more with it if the tool is capable of it. Zipwall poles are around $125 for a pair, and the 3rd hand poles are $35. Seems like a big difference, especially since the 3rd hand is advertised as being strong enough to hold up drywall, where as the Zipwall ads are for dust barriers only.

We use the zipwall system. We have 4 poles and use whatever plastic we need. We also sometimes use there taci mat. Good stuff, well made and shouldn't have to buy it more than once. We have had ours for 3 years. DanT

david.
I purchased several 3rd hands primarily for dust barriers. I am pleased with the product for that purpose and have come up with many more situations to use them. Here's a review of the them I did a while back you might be interested in.

extended to 12' there's a bit of wobble, I wouldn't try to use them in aiding hanging sheetrock fully extended.
The price for sure can't be beat.

Third hands are the greatest for dust curtains, David. I was trying to get a deal out of my hardware supplier on a Zipwall starter set and she says "have you seen these third hands"? I hadn't. I have one of the old blue ones and three of the new and improved red ones with spring loaded ball catches every...maybe 12"? Anyway, they are top notch and as you mentioned, far cheaper than Zipwalls.
There are a variety of attachments to clip on the feet too, for holding plastic or giving a wider base...probably more by now. They were designed by that guy up in Bellingham...I think the company name is "Fastcap". Lots of great innovative tools - no drip glue bottle, colored wax for nail holes...tons of usful ideas. I'm pretty sure the guy used to be a cabinet maker and just started making stuff he wanted but couldn't find commercially available (at least that's what I've been told by someone I have no reason to doubt).
Western Builders Supply, in Tacoma, hes a pretty large display of Fastcap stuff. Plus, then you and John Harkins and I could all get together for a cup of coffee.
Jim, you going to the JLC show in Portland?
When is it this year? November? December?
I'd like to go down for one day, say hi to some folks, cruise the tool and material displays, maybe take in a few hours of Michael Byrnes...
You going?
It's the end of October... 28th-30th. My wife and I are going down there, as her father lives near Portland and we can even bring the dog. I'll hit the show at least one day, maybe two, probably Saturday fer sher and maybe some of Friday. We'll drive down Friday early and back on Sunday.
I'm liking my Third Hands. They come in handy for way more than dust curtains.

I have and use both. The 3rd Hand is much more of a heavy duty, last forever tool. It works well as a dust barrier and can also be used as a work support. I get them from Coastal for $29. http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/other/fastcap/3rd_hand.htm?L+coastest+dwtc8569ffa123a1+1094965161 They drop ship from fastcap, got mine in two days (NYC). You might check the fast cap website, I think Paul has a policy of meeting any other price. http://www.fastcap.com
