I'd like to know how you can get 4' verticle rebar to stay up and not fall over when placed into a wet footing. I've used 2' sections with a hook at the end but I'm going to have a 4' wall this time. I've thought about installing the smaller bar into the footing wet and then tying 4' sections to that after it sets but this seems like a waste of time. Any experience with this? Thanks
*kirk, its nice to know that someone else out thereuses hook bars instead of driving the bar downin the dirt. make yourself some quick x-braces and lay a 2x4 in the top part of the x.holds them just fine.
*unless the detail shows different, we just bang 'em down into the dirt...they are vertical reinforcement and are getting all the lateral support and uplift resistance they need from the depth of the footing...if you have a one foot deep footing and a four foot wall, use six foot rebar and bang 'em down a foot......if the spec or detail shows something else... we do the something else...

*I'm with Darryl. Tie your bars to a horizontal 2 x 4 suspended above the forms. We used to use plywood templates for bolt patterns for vertical steel in commercial work too, same principle.
*First off, the rebar should not be pounded into the ground. The rebar should have no ground contact. You can tie your "J" bars in place before you pour.Or, if you time it right, you can place them in the wet concrete.Wait till it's just stiff enough to hold the bar and then slide it in at an angle bringing it upright and using an up and down motion. If that makes any sense. Sounds like one of those chat rooms.
