my boss says his heigbors tree roots are in his drain tile and his sump pump has been running for four days straight. he asked me if i knew a way for him to clean it out himself.
won’t a electric auger cause damage to the tile? how can you prevent it from happening again besides cutting down the tree?
thanks in advance!

shameless bump!
What kind of tile?
The hook jaw style rooter will cut roots with minimal damage to most piping systems.
Problem---- is the pipe still round, & how many bends---- those are the things that will fail when hit with a rooter snake.
all he said was 6" green perforated tile. he did mention that it is pretty much a straight shot through his yard.
That pipe usually stays round when backfilled, & can handle a snake better than the currogated flex pipe.
I would be comfortable using a root cutter blade in that pipe.

i told you wrong. he told me today it is 6" solid. still the same approach?
Since Plumbill hasn't replied, I'll just say that I would think that solid pipe would take rooting out with cutters even better than perforated--less for the auger to catch on, I would think.
I agree with Danno.

thanks guys!
next question would the portable electric augers you buy at the boxes be suffcient?
To prevent roots from coming back after you cut them out, there are commercial products, but I've heard that copper sulfate works. (It is poisonous, so be careful with it.) It's what our sewer reaming guy recommended.
