A finish carpenters toolbox, take 2…
Before the changeover to prospero, there was a thread about recommended tools for finish carpenters which I had printed out and saved for reference (great christmas/birthday present ideas). I have torn the house apart to no avail, and the thread did not make the journey here to prospero.
Can we try a sequel? What tools do you finish guys love? What can’t you do without?
I bought a couple of the little things I had read about and really like them, a red devil scraper/prybar and a lee valley japanese nailset.
what are a couple of my favorites?
-a starrett spring loaded center punch, great for setting nails.
-my six-inch starrett combination square, jusr feels right in my hand.
-a set of little shaping planes made by collins tool. haven’t used these too much yet, but i know i will. a really cool tool for you plane junkies.
-a lee valley apron plane (low angle block)
So, lets hear it…

went to lee valley the other day when in town & picked up a cover for 45 gal can to use with vaccuum got home and had the wrong one, called them back & they sent me a new one by mail in a great big box packed as if it was going around the world. The replacement took only two days to get to me by can post a record in itself they also pay the cost of sending the wrong one back

Stan,
Couldn't help but notice your list includes a "flex pad sanding disc" and was immediately reminded that I'm still hunting a source for an item that is seemingly hard to find. Maybe you know where...a 5 "soft pad can be found. I do scuptural sanding with these drill mounted pads that have a 1/4" metal shank which is attached to the sanding pad with a rubber ball type mount and there's about 5/16" of fairly stiff rubber foam that the PSA sanding discs actually adhere to.
I used to be able buy the things thru Sears, but they no longer carry them. I bought 18 of the things about 15 years ago, but now that supply is getting low and I have so far failed in my attempts to find a current source.
Any notions......... other than stop doing sculptural work?

Goldhiller: Cant help you there. My flex pads were found at a woodworking show. The biggest is 3 inches,,and my smallest one is 1.5 inches.
They might sell those flexible sanding discs at auto body supply houses. I have bought some great sanding tools there, like 2000 grit screens for my 5" orbital sander. You might check the yellow pages. Hell, you might be able to find something like that online if you knew where to look.
goldhiller,
have you tried klingspor? they carry lots of sanding stuff...
another idea might be jamestown, a supplier who caters to boatbuilders...
good luck.

Thanks for the Klingspor lead, I shall give them a look/see. I've got a Jamestown Distributors catalog upstairs. Don't recall seeing them in there, but ya know..........I wasn't looking for them either. I'll look again. Knowledge is power, but only if applied in a timely fashion.
Try a paint store. i pick them up at smith paints. Dont know where you live but its worth a try.

Thank you, Ron. Never even crossed my mind to look for them at a paint store. Probably should have, but didn't.
Amongst other places, I checked with my guy at Sandpaper, Inc. but he had no leads to this particular style of pad. Tried the auto body shops and supply houses of course, but never thought about a paint store.

Vanderpooch, what I have in my tool box, most days, is the Frame, and it's gotta be the right frame, it's located in Mind. Be safe out there Jim J.
